COLEUS, Coleus forskohlii
Parts used: Root
Constituents: Essential oil and diterpenes, especially the labdane diterpene forskolin (0.2 to 0.3%), which is also known as coleonol
 
Actions Indications

Cardio tonic
Hypotensive

Hypertension, Congestive heart failure, cerebrovascular disease (vasodilation) - but not to be used in cases of low blood pressure

Vasodilator

 

Antiplatelet

Ischaemic heart disease and thrombosis (antiplatelet effect)

Anti-glaucoma

Glaucoma (topically and possibly internally

Spasmolytic

Asthma, chronic obstructive airways disease, bronchodilatation.

Digestive insufficiency, increases proteolytic enzymes from stomach and pancreas, this stabilizes the immune system (autoimmune disease). Possible uses for weight loss, psoriasis, poor fertility, mild hypothyroidism by mimicking TSH

 

Herbal extract, 40-80mL per week

For glaucoma about 4 to 8 drops of 1:1 extract in an eve bath

Contraindications: Forskolin has the ability to potentiate many drugs. Use cautiously in patients taking prescribed medication. Contraindicated in hypotension
