AZIATISCHE GINSENG, Panax ginseng
Parts used: Root; Red Ginseng is steamed before drying
Constituents: Dammarane saponins or saponin glycosides; ginsenosides and other saponins, glycans and essential oils
 
Actions Indications

Adaptogen

Short-term; tiredness or stress or where increased mental or physical performance is required, increases vital energy. Long-term; elderly and infirm as a tonic, increases longevity. Sparing action on adrenals

Tonic
Thymoleptic

To the nervous system. Memory; increases levels of amines in the brain, and decreases serotonin levels. To aid recovery from disease or surgery

Immunostimulant

Infections, organ prolapse, cold limbs, asthma, dyspnea

Hepatoprotective

To minimize the side effects of chemo-therapy or radiation

Hypoglycaemic

May be useful for diabetes, alcoholism, drug abuse, depression, mental disorders, asthma and cancer

Cardioprotective
Antiarrhythmic

Angina, heart attacks, cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure, palpitations, prostration

Stimulant

Menopause, impotence and poor sperm function

Anti-tumour

Anti-inflammatory due to its effect on endogenous glucocorticoids (combine with Licorice)

 

Herbal extract, 5-15mL per week

Energetics: Warming, sweet, slightly bitter

Adverse Effects: Higher doses can overstimulate and aggravate insomnia, irritability, hypertension and can cause tremor, euphoria, headaches, palpitation, decreased sexual function, morning diarrhoea, skin eruptions and menstrual abnormalities. Use only for 2 weeks and continue with Siberian ginseng

Contraindications: Acute asthma, hypertension, acute infections (increases cortisol), oedema and pregnancy
