Parts used: Seeds and husk
Constituents: Mucilage (up to 30%), Monoterpene alkaloids, Triterpenes and fixed oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids i.e. linoleic, oleic acid
Actions Indications
Bulk laxative GI tract, Crohn’s, constipation, diarrhoea, dysentery, anal fissures*, haemorrhoids*, IBS, diverticulosis, colitis, heartburn, constipation in pregnancy*. To evacuate toxins
Demulcent Gonorrhea, gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, cystitis, a demulcent for coughs and colds (especially for children)
Anti-cholesterol Will reduce side effects of cholesterol lowering drugs Hypercholesterolemia. Lowers LDL, for weight loss and obesity

*Stools become softer and easier to pass
Seeds, soak add to cereal (start with 1 teaspoon a day)
Energetics: Astringent, sweet, cooling
Contraindications: Stenoses of the GI tract or ileus, diabetes mellitus where insulin adjustment is a problem. Not in first 6 months if history of miscarriage
Seeds can be applied externally as a poultice (furunculosis)
